The Adventures of Beekle The Unimaginary Friend by Dan Santat is a dreamy story. The story of an imaginary friend that hasn't found it's person yet. Beekle goes looking for his person and finds her. It's full of amazing characters, places, and real places too. When he finds his person they have a great time together.
The illustrations for this book were done in pencil, crayon, watercolor, ink, and Adobe Photoshop. The text was hand-lettered. I love the art and story. It's darker and moody when Beekle is alone, and brightens up when he goes to find his friend. It's a story told from a point of view that I've never seen before so that's huge plus in interest level.
I think this story will best be used with 2nd grade and older. This level of imagination takes an older child. But I'd love to hear from others if they've experience otherwise. I'll experiment and try it with Kindergarten and 1st grade to see if they get it.
