Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads by Bob Shea, illustrated by Lane Smith is one hilarious, rip-roarin' hoot of a story. I love the cock-eyed, backward psycho babble the sheriff spits out. Kids will love this read aloud, it's silly, has cowboys and outlaws, and a tortoise!
The art seems to be done digitally. The line work, shadows, and textures are impressive. I like how the stagecoach is tailored to look like a dinosaur, the shot between the legs of the Toad brothers of the jail, and the last picture of Sheriff Ryan going slowly into the sunset. The Toad brothers are so bad, mean and slimy looking. The kid sheriff will of course have great kid appeal to kids with his white hat and dinosaur knowledge. The townfolk are pretty darn gullable so being the adults in the story, the students will love that too!
I'll use this read aloud for Preschool to 3rd grade. The students I read to love it when I bring in a book that has surprises in it and this one is chock full.
