Nana in the City by Lauren Castillo is a lovely family story. A grandson goes to visit his grandmother in the busy city and he thinks that this big, scary city is no place for a Nana to live! But Nana saves the visit by making him a special cape.
The illustrations were executed in watercolors. I love the combination of the hard, gray city with the soft, watercolor washes of the water and parks around the city. I love the contrasts of the dark black edges and trees with the bright colors, and how she was able to focus the story with the use of red and keep our eye moving through the story.
This story will work great with PreK to 2nd grade. It could be used in several different themes for Storytime or in the classroom with family stories, stories on courage or bravery, or using it to compare and contrast with another family story.
