Winter Bees and Other Poems of the Cold by Joyce Sidman, illustrated by Rick Allen is enchanting art with lyrical poetry. Add in some real information and you've got a knock-out book. Each poem falls naturally from the lips as the pictures glide across the page to where the paragraph explains the winter phenomenon.
The images for the book were made through the unlikely marriage of some very old and almost new art mediums. The individual elements of each picture (animals, trees, snowflakes, etc.) were cut, inked, and printed from linoleum blocks and then hand-colored. Those prints were then digitally scanned, composed, and layered to create the illustrations for the poems.
This book will be a joy to share with teachers and students. When you can offer the finest of informational text with poetry and breathtaking art, you have the best to capture the student's imagination. This title will inspire them to learn more about the animals and life that goes on during the winter months. I'll use this with Kindergarten to 5th grade, depending on how much at a time.
