Telephone by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Jen Corace is a very new take on the old game 'telephone'. You know the one where someone whispers something in your ear and you pass it along to the next person and so on around the circle. When it gets to the last person, it's a totally different message. Well this telephone message is passed on by birds on a telephone or electrical wires. It's a clever storyline and clever pictures. The illustrations in this book were rendered in watercolor, ink, gouache, and pencil on paper. The first scene you see the birds in silhouette on the wire with houses and people below. Then you see the birds, two by two as they pass along the message. In the background you see silly things going on as the message gets all messed up.
I think the humor in this book will work best with first or second graders and older. It reminds me of the kind of humor you get with the puns in Amelia Bedelia and those work well with those ages. If they've played the game before, maybe Kindergarteners would get it too.
