Going Places by Peter H. Reynolds and Paul A. Reynolds, illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds is genius! I love Rafael and Maya's 'out-of-the-box' thinking! I was into the fourth spread and my mind went wild. I can so use this book this summer. We're getting sets of Sean Kenney's 35 pieces, we have the book, but also the different colored sets of Legos. We'll be using engineering to read the plans and make each set, but now we can also divert from the plan and go crazy with our own ideas. Going Places gave me the idea to do both. Nothing is wrong with either, following directions and making what is set before you or going in another direction. Rafael put his go-cart together as is, at first. Then he saw how Maya engineered her kit to be original. I also enjoyed how they worked together to make something more than the either could do alone.
The digitally illustrated art uses bright colors, great shadows, and imagination to create this indicative work that celebrates the spirit of creativity. When you look at the cover can't you just imagine Rafael and Maya shouting, "To infinity and beyond!"
