The Soccer Fence: A Story of Friendship, Hope and Apartheid in South Africa by Phil Bildner, illustrated by Jesse Joshua Watson is an inspiring story that depicts two young men and their parallel as South Africa heals. One black, one white, the two young men see each other over the fence while playing soccer. As apartheid falls and South Africa slowly recovers and heals, the two young men attend the African Cup of Nations and slowly become teammates in their own soccer game.
The line art was done in pencil and processed digitally, then painted in acrylic on illustration board. The art shows sensitivity and joy. There is a bit of history page, bibliography and a timeline.
I'll use this story when I go to the school to share books. I can always use another culturally diverse story to show how people can learn to live together. This title blends a lovely story of hope with beautiful art.
