Does a Woodpecker Use a Hammer? by Harriet Ziefert, illustrations by Emily Bolam is one of a new series call 'Think About....' and is a first nonfiction book.
This series poses a question, which is the title, then it goes into more depth asking if other animals use a hammer and compares that to humans and how we use tools. There is a letter to parents in the front and questions in the back to help parents understand how to use these books with their children. I like how they help parents help their children learn to problem solve and think through a question. It works it's way through some common human tools and a bit of history. Other titles in this series include:
Does a Bear Wear Boots?
Does a Beaver Sleep in a Bed?
Does a Camel Cook Spaghetti?
Does a Panda Go to School?
Does an Owl Wear Eyeglasses?
Does a Tiger Go to the Dentist?
Does a Hippo Go to the Doctor? and
Does a Seal Smile?
I'll use these with a group of preschoolers and with Kindergarten to second grade. I'm sure the teachers will love this series as well as the parents.
