Thoughtful Thursdays

Beauty and the Beast a retelling by H. Chuku Lee, illustrations by Pat Cummings is rich with color and tradition.  This version of The Beauty and the Beast is set in West Africa.  Other than the setting it follows a classic telling of the story.  I love all the different faces and masks in this story that seem to always be looking at Beauty.  It gives a mysterious feel to the art.
The artist used watercolor, goache, pencil, and pastel on 300-lb. Fabriano Artistico hot-press paper to create the illustrations for this book. I love all the warmth and depth in the illustrations.  The beast's garden is fascinating too.
I'll recommend this title to parents and teachers and children, for ages preschool to third or fourth grade.
