Friday Favorites

Old Mikamba Had a Farm by Rachel Isadora is an amazing African version of 'Old MacDonald.'  It's Isadora's style of African storytelling with an old fairytale or nursery rhyme.  The extraordinary pictures have a two-page spread with a colorful border and an animal.  For example, the baboon that goes ooh-ha-ha here and there; the whinny of the zebra; and the grrrrr-grrrrr of the cheetah.
I like that she used newspaper for the elephant and rhinos and painted and cut paper for the hippo and the warthog. The illustrations were done with oil paints, printed paper, palette paper, ink and pencil.  As with Isadora the colors are magnificent.
I'll use this title in Storytime and when I go to schools.  The preschoolers and Kindergarten set will love it too.
