Once Upon a Northern Night by Jean E. Pendziwol, illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault is an old-fashioned looking book with it's limited color palette. It's a lovely winter bedtime lullaby that whispers like the wind.
This title plays out with a child at bedtime and the poem paints the outside world while the child falls asleep. The illustrations were done in mixed media - pencil, gouache, watercolor, and ink - and assembled digitally.
The words and paintings fit so well together. As the words paint a picture, the illustrations capture the words in soft harmony.
I'll use this book in Storytime with older preschoolers, 4 -5 year-olds as well as Kindergarteners to 3rd graders. This is also one I'll recommend to parents for a quiet bedtime story.
