Hide-and-Seek Science: Animal Camouflage by Emma Stevenson is collection of habitats and how animal's coloring camouflage them from predators.
The artwork was created with gouache. The multi-layered illustrations are carefully painted and on a 2 page spread, then turn the page and all the animals have been numbered with a line of information on each animal with a paragraph for the habitat.
This title will encourage those students that love the search and find books like Waldo, I Spy, and others, to search, but then adds a layer of information. The next step would be to capitalize on their interest and hurl them into more informational texts. I would use this with school-age children.
I love the watercolor paintings, especially the swamp with its above and below water scene, the rainforest, and the coral reef. I like Stevenson's wet-in-wet and dry brushing techniques.
