Old Black Fly by Jim Aylesworth, illustrated by Stephen Gammell fits into several categories. It's an ABC book, it rhymes, and provides several early literacy skills. With its action, the narrative stays moving right along. With the color and white space, the print motivation and print awareness helps keep the reader moving, noticing the picture but also looking for the colorful alphabet letter.
There is so much to watch in this title. When the frenzied flying of the insect takes over from the title page, it's crazy flowing fun. Children or adults will take their time and want to reread. From what I can gather, the illustrations combine watercolors with pen, ink, and colored pencils.
