Count the Monkeys by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Kevin Cornell is a rollicking good time. From 1 King Cobra to 10 Polka-Dotted Rhinoceroses with bagpipes and bad breath, this silly story ends up not counting a single monkey, but it's hilarious fun not counting monkeys.
The pictures were done in watercolors, pen and ink, graphite (pencil), gouache, and digital. Kevin Cornell shares some sketches on his website, here.
The story and pictures have great color, movement, and encourages the reader to add their own movements. You can tell that Cornell likes to draw happy crocodiles. This author and illustrator seem to have good communication between them, if this title is an example.
