In the Sea by David Elliott, illustrated by Holly Meade is an underwater dazzle. Poetry paired with the watercolor and woodblock prints to represent different sea creatures, this 2012 book flows so well. It's a companion to On the Farm and In the Wild with Elliot.
The words and paintings intertwine so well, I'm surprised this book didn't make a bigger splash this year, Meade is a Caldecott Honoree.
This book works well taking a poem or two out of context and using it in Storytime for an ocean theme, or using it all together for Kindergarten to third graders. Each poem gives at least one piece of information about the animal, and the illustrations add life to them, a visual delight.
