Counting on Fall written by Lizann Flatt and illustrated by Ashley Barron is a cut paper delight. The book is informational text with some rhyming and the art is layered collage.
Flatt has done many non-fiction books and says on her website that math was always challenging to her, so she decided to try a book that would help kids relate to math in a better way.
Barron has done many kinds of illustrations, Counting on Fall is the first in a series on Math in Nature. Check out her work closer on her website.
This title would be good for Prek-2nd grade to introduce a math concept. There is estimating, counting by tens and fives, and more. There are nature notes in the back on the different plants and animals in the book.
I appreciate the layered look of the collaged pictures. It gives terrific depth and I appreciate the easy feeling it gives math.
