There Was a Tree by Rachel Isadora is a breathtaking book. This version of the familiar song is done with rebus pictures and splendid scenery on the African plain.
The illustrations were done with oil paints, printed paper and palette paper. They depict the tree and it's surroundings with far away scenes and then closer focus on the branch, nest and bird.
There is music in the back, with a rebus glossary, but I can see this being poured over again and again, very slowly to see every little bit and then going through it fast to sing it.
I admire that each full page spread is enclosed in a home made border and that each one is different. This book is filled with rich, deep colors and textures, but each animal's personality comes through.
