Seven Little Mice Go to the Beach by Haruo Yamashita, illustrated by Kazuo Iwamura is an engaging story with pleasing watercolor with pen and ink art. The seven little mice go to the beach with mom and dad.
When I read the part where lunch is rice balls, I wondered about the nationality of the story.
It was first published in Japan in 1983, but other than the lunch, this story could be set anywhere where you can go to the beach.
I didn't think the story sounded or felt dated, even though it was obviously written almost 30 years ago. A timeless family adventure when the children help save dad - classic!
