The Heart of the Wood by Marguerite W. Davol, illustrated by Sheila Hamanaka is the beautiful story about the music made from a piece wood from a tree. This cumulative style: "This is the House That Jack Built" follows the sycamore tree from Winderly Woods to the bird singing, to the woodcutter, the sawmill, to the carver, and the fiddler that makes the music.
The illustrations were done in oil paints on bark paper. I couldn't find a website just for Sheila Hamanaka, but the author, Marguerite W. Davol has one. Heart of the Wood is out of print, but as always, check with your library to read a copy. If you'd like to purchase an out of print copy, I've had good success with Amazon for used and out of print books.
